Campagne Paciprod: Production des upwellings cotiers (Peru) et equatoriaux (Zones des iles des Galapagos) ArchiMer
Minas, Hj; Coste, B.
Two types of stations were occupied: CTD hydrocast stations for water chemistry and continuous vertical profiles of chemical parameters in the upper 200 meter layer (SHET profiles). Selected biological stations were carried out mainly for primary productivity (in situ super(14)C method), phytoplankton biomass and photometric measurements (quantum- and spectroirradiance-meters) in the photic zone. Zooplankton was collected at nearly all the stations of the cruise in order to determine biomass and species composition. A long Peru-Galapagos connecting section with 19 stations was carried out for water chemistry down to 2000 meters.

Carbon and nitrogen uptake and export in the equatorial Pacific at 150 degrees W: Evidence of an efficient regenerated production cycle ArchiMer
Raimbault, P; Slawyk, G; Boudjellal, B; Coatanoan, Christine; Conan, Pascal; Coste, B; Garcia, N; Moutin, T; Pujo-pay, M.
Biomass, inorganic carbon and nitrogen uptake, ammonium regeneration, nitrification, and vertical flux of particulate matter were measured in the equatorial Pacific at 21 daily productivity stations occupied on a meridional transect (150 degrees W) between 1 degrees N and 16 degrees S. Three areas could be distinguished along the transect: (1) the equatorial area between 1 degrees N and 6 degrees S, where nitrate concentrations were typically eutrophic, reaching up to 3 mu g-at L(-1) in surface waters; (2) an intermediate mesotrophic area between 6 degrees and 10 degrees S, where surface nitrate concentrations decreased from 1 mu g-at L(-1) to zero; and (3) the oligotrophic area beyond 10 degrees S, characterized by warm and nitrate poor waters. Although...

Conditions hydrologiques, chimiques et production primaire dans les upwellings du Perou et des iles Galapagos, en regime d'hivers austral (Campagne Paciprod) ArchiMer
Minas, Hj; Coste, B; Minas, M; Raimbault, P.
The Paciprod Cruise of the R/V Jean-Charcot was devoted to study upwellings and their biological consequences in the coastal area of Peru and in the equatorial divergence zone around the Galapagos Archipelago. Main objectives, methodology and shipboard experimentations have been reported.

Les elements nutritifs dans le bassin occidental de la Mediterranee. Bilan des echanges avec l'ocean Atlantique a Gibraltar ArchiMer
Coste, B; Le Corre, P; Minas, Hj; Morin, P.
Nutrient measurements were performed during the Mediprod IV cruise of the R.V. Jean Charcot in the whole western basin of the Mediterranean Sea, special attention being paid to the Alboran Sea and to the Strait of Gibraltar. From these data, new values for the nutrient budget of the Mediterranean Sea are obtained. It appears that dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) contributes to the total nitrogen input in an amount of more than 50%, and that the river runoff contribution accounts for less than 10% of the total nutrient input. High values of the N : P ratio in the Mediterranean Sea (> 20) are explained by the nitrogen and phosphorus content of the superficial layers of the water inflow into the Mediterranean Sea, together with mineralization processes...

Production de base et de recyclage; une revue de la problematique en Mediterranee nord-occidentale ArchiMer
Minas, Hj; Minas, M; Coste, B; Gostan, J; Nival, P; Bonin, M P.
Apparent nutrient consumption and oxygen production, representing net community production, appear among other methods to offer a valuable approach to new production. Net community production determinations were carried out a long time ago in the Mediterranean Sea, with the idea of comparing them with super(14)C-productivity measurements. Our main objective here is to summarize the results of these studies and to review them in relation to the latest discussions concerning productivity of the Sargasso Sea. In the main oligotrophic coastal waters of the Ligurian Sea, there is no evidence for positive net production in the subsurface oxygen maximum associated with the summer thermocline (Minas, Coste, 1964), and Reid's (1962) physical explanation of the...

Seasonal water mass distribution in the Indonesian throughflow entering the Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Coatanoan, Christine; Metzl, N; Fieux, M; Coste, B.
A multiparametric approach is used to analyze the seasonal properties of water masses in the eastern Indian Ocean. The data were measured during two cruises of the Java Australia Dynamic Experiment (JADE) program carried out during two opposite seasons: August 1989 (SE monsoon) and February-March 1992 (NW monsoon). These cruises took place at the end of a La Nina event and during an EI. Nino episode, respectively. Seven sources have been identified in the studied region for the 200-800 m layer: the Subtropical Indian Water, the Indian Central Water, the modified Antarctic Intermediate Water, the Indonesian Subsurface Water, the Indonesian Intermediate Water, the Arabian Sea-Persian Gulf Water (AS-PGW), and the Arabian Sea-Red Sea Water (AS-RSW). The...

The vicinity of the Strait of Gibraltrar: A source of a permanent high productivity ArchiMer
Minas, H; Coste, B; Minas, M.
Satellite infrared imagery shows that a cooling of the sea furface occurs in the Strait of Gibraltar and along the Spanish coast in the Alboran Sea. Since this cooling has an internal origin, it implicates also a nutrient transport into the photic zone. A high chlorophyll area off the Spanish coast, also shown by ocean color imagery (CZCS, Nimbus 7) demonstrate a high productivity. Hydrological and chemical observations made during the French "MEDIPROD IV" cruise on the Jean-Charcot allow to explain this high productivity. The high productivity entertains at mid-depth, by organic sedimentation, an oxygen minimum layer which corresponds to a nutrient maximum (phosphate and nitrate). This high biological activity is useful for hydrological purposes since the...
